The San Bernard River is one of the most popular recreational rivers in southern Texas.  It is unique in the way that in one day you can go fishing, then take the family out for water skiing, and then top it off with a trip to the beach.

*       The San Bernard River rises in southwestern Austin County.

*        It flows southeast for 120 miles, forming all or part of the county lines between Austin and Colorado, Austin and Wharton, and Wharton and Fort Bend counties

*        It then cuts across southern Brazoria County and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway to enter directly into the Gulf.

*        The San Bernard River flows into the Gulf 3.5 miles SW from the mouth of Brazos River.

*        From the Intracoastal Waterway, 0.8 mile above the mouth, the channel has been dredged to a point near the West Columbia highway bridge 22 miles above the Intracoastal Waterway.

*        In January 2001, the controlling depth was 2.2 feet (7.7 feet at mid-channel) to about 3.75 miles above the mouth; thence in 1994, the mid-channel controlling depth was 9.0 feet to the West Columbia highway bridge.
